I really enjoyed reading #GIRLBOSS and as I went through it, I couldn’t help but translate Sophia Amoruso’s trials and tribulations, successes, and advice to the world of fashion blogging. Being a fashion blogger certainly has its fair share of similarities to how she built Nasty Gal, from its entrepreneurial nature and learning everything as you go to the importance of creativity in order to stand out from the crowd. Here’s some of the key quotes that can easily translate to the world of blogging:

Love What You Do First…And the Money Will Follow

I think that part of the reason Nasty Gal has been so successful is because my goals weren’t financial ones. I believed in what I was doing and fortunately other people believed in it as well. I cared as much about the process, as I did about the results. No decision was too small, whether it was the word choice in a  product description or an expression on a model’s face, I treated everything with the utmost care…in hindsight, I see that it’s those small things that can make or break a business.” (Chapter 5: Money Looks Better in the Bank Than on Your Face)

Increasingly, I’ve noticed that some newbie bloggers have an expectation of immediate success, both reputation-wise and financially. In reality, it’s a lot of work, and takes a while to get there. Every little detail that goes into your blog and its overall message is important, to differentiate it from other blogs, but also to show that you genuinely care for your readership.

If you truly love blogging, you will want to make sure all the pieces work succinctly and in unison with each other, and sure, there are things that you may like to do less than others, but overall, it will be evident that you LOVE fashion blogging and want to enthusiastically share your point of view in this capacity with others.

Starting a blog can be very, very overwhelming, especially if you are doing it on top of another career, your personal life, and any other responsibilities or obligations you may have. It certainly can feel like too much at times, but deliberate on each item and take time to grow them little by little. For example, it’s important to decide on your blog’s mission statement, name and tagline before tackling content, design, and social media channels. Establish a good foundation with clear goals, and then it will be easier to build the rest.

Over the years, I’ve seen people who have started off fashion blogging as a hobby absolutely just love it, and become so immersed in it and the community that it eventually became their primary jobs, leaving careers as varied as being lawyers, nurses, marketing, and other kinds of professionals to pursue their fashion blogging passion, and fully dedicating their time to it. Not to say that this doesn’t take planning, and some compromising like Amoruso mentioned, but if it’s something that you really love, take the plunge and see where it takes you!

Constantly Evaluate What  Works Best for Your Blog

Currently, I am always trying to imagine things from the customer’s point of view… Today, our team is constantly working together to examine what has made us successful, what of that we want to keep around, and what newness we can introduce to evolve the brand. We then have to communicate that, and share it…We have to know what looks good on us as a brand.” (Chapter 10: Creativity in Everything)

There will come a time when you are receiving products, and offered campaigns and contracts to promote brands and goods, and you may have to do some serious thinking as to whether it is good fit for your blog. Is it an organic extension of your blog as a brand? Does it represent the direction you want to take? What will your readers think?

You never stop asking the question if something is brand-right; every time you write a post, put a pic up on Instagram, or do a re-design, it should be somewhere floating in your consciousness.
