Right Now: Start Where You Are

I wrote about this a couple years ago, but it’s worth noting again and again: sometimes we get caught up in not starting something, or trying something new because we don’t have the right equipment, the time, the space, or whatever we THINK we need. But here’s the thing: you don’t NEED all that stuff, all you need is the desire, the will, and the commitment. Really.

Now, in all honesty, I’m not one to talk. Most of the time, before I do ANYTHING, I read literally everything I can on the subject, and then maybe I get to the actual doing part…maybe not. This year, though, I am just doing. I’m going to start wherever I am and just do.

For example, one of my main goals is to write more non-work-related stuff. So, instead of reading too much on the subject, like I’m REALLY tempted to do (!) I’m going to make a habit of sitting down for some time every day and just write.

More ideas:

Don’t have a DSLR?

Use your phone, or a point and shoot. I used a point and shoot camera for 9 years, and it never stopped me from taking outfit pictures 3x a week. Photo quality is slightly poorer, but not by much. And you can do wonders with photo-editing software!

Don’t have Photoshop?

Speaking of photo-editing software…I used iPhoto, pixelmator (for Apple), or Gimp (when I was on Linux) up until a few months ago to edit photos and create graphics. Now I use Lightroom and Photoshop via a subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud (which is worth the investment), and I love it, but if you can’t afford it, the free/cheaper services are more than sufficient for whatever you need to do. I promise.

Don’t have the time to figure out WordPress or self-host your blog?

Use Blogger, TUMBLR, or wordpress.com. You can always transfer over later, when you have more time to learn and maintain your blog. For now, if you just want to write, and share your passion, start simple and don’t fret.

Don’t have the cash?

Despite how it looks, you don’t have to have the latest designer clothes to be a successful fashion blogger. Use what you have, carve out your niche, and happy blogging! There’s always room for new fashion bloggers who focus on vintage, lingerie, thrifting, or whatever it is that you’re passionate about.

At the end of the day, the most important thing is to be yourself, no one else can. You have a voice, a unique perspective, and there’s a reason you’re drawn to blogging, or starting whatever it is you want to start. Don’t let fear of failure, or of not being good enough stop you from doing it. Just start. Right where you are.
